In The Area - Footscray

They say the inner-west is best. This week we’re highlighting some of our favourite spots in Footscray.

By Always Live

Surely whoever coined the phrase "the Inner-West" was referring to Footscray: epitomized by its burgeoning music scene, endless amazing restaurants and close knit, creative community. Today we're taking a quick trip on the Weribee Line to colourful Footscray and sharing our favourite spots along the way.

A crate diggers delight, Footscray Records is treasure trove of opportunity. With inventory painstakingly curated by owner/operator Joshua Hodson-Smith, Footscray Records offers a vital service to the local community: a genre-less shopping experience. From the recent Olivia Rodrigo album to obscure, imported West African releases and everything in between, even the most discerning record collector will be able to find gold.

The central ethos of Mamma Chen’s is that live music is for everyone. This family run venue is guided by the desire to operate a diverse, equitable and accessible space for punters, and no stone has been left unturned. Ramps, wheelchair accessible toilets, a strobe ban and dyslexia-friendly fonts on their signage are featured throughout the venue. With a focus on showcasing artists across the genre spectrum in their live room, it’s the perfect place to discover your new favourite band.

New kid on the block Misfits is a community focused music and art space, hosting workshops, local and international DJs and serving drinks five nights a week.

Opened in March of this year and pioneered by longtime friends Jacob Bell (Ferdydurke, Whitehart), Amber Hahipene (Section 8, Comet Beverages) and Jerry Poon (The Operatives), Misfits’ ethos is simple: providing a cozy, inclusive, live music venue that ticks all the boxes. With an extensive wine list, tasty cocktails and pizza delivery from Slice Shop Pizza it’s a no brainer for a night out in the Inner West.
